In this workshop we will work on expanding our sonic range in our writing. We’ll spend some time with the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Cesar Vallejo, Haryette Mullen, and Nathaniel Mackey to tune our ears to possibility. We’ll write and revise towards sonic intensity, listening for echo, reverb, undertones and overtones, what Hopkins called “oftening, over-and-overing, aftering.” This class is for anyone at any level of writing.
Julie Carr is an American poet, writer, and Professor of English at the University of Colorado Boulder. She is the author of more than thirteen books of poetry and prose, including Underscore, Mud, Blood, and Ghosts, and The Garden, published jointly by Pamenar Press and Essay Press in 2025. Her honours include a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry. With Jennifer Pap, she co-translated Leslie Kaplan’s The Book of Skies, published by Pamenar Press in 2024. Carr is also the co-founder of Counterpath Press, Counterpath Gallery, and Counterpath Community Garden in Denver, and hosts the podcast Return the Key: Jewish Questions for Everyone. Her recent work includes collaborations with dance, video, and music artists.
