Reading Robert Walser on the Train
Fresh, tiny streams, woven into the creases of the land. I try to remember, here, some lines I once wrote long ago, but instead I will write them anew. “Almost” is the title of my life. Every window is not merely a pane of glass, but a mirror. The sunset brews such absent colours, such gentle noise. A softly shaded dip beneath the trees, the space between the hillside and the wall … and all those meetings that never took place. We awaken, sometimes, to a feeling of regret, not privileged to know its object. We chance on more than one occasion to reach out and brush that wall; to pause beside that tree. But either way, the sunlight quickly fades, retreating from the air, retiring from the branches. We never see the place where it springs forth.
