A canary flies in Golestan Palace of the Qajars in Tehran as if unfolds through fragmented, interwoven narratives that consider the possibility of a bird narrating what it sees: three famines forced upon Iran; the forced unveiling of women; the partitioning of the country between dominant powers; and the nationalization of oil, leading to the coup against Mohammad Mosadeq all appear as fragments left unresolved rather than explained, as if the bird were saying: you will not understand me, let’s keep it that way. This pamphlet is a section of a longer book that moves across a specific historical juncture in Iran, from the Iranian Constitutional Revolution (1906–1911) to 1953, when a joint CIA–MI6 coup d’état ended years of gradual effort toward democracy and independence in Iran.
